Real Estate Investing Weekly Wisdom #288 - Need a good laugh?

Need a good laugh? Who doesn't! This week Dean shares a good one (if you were at the EDGE, you're going to love seeing this again!) By all means – watch and enjoy! Exercise those grin muscles! BUT – there's a deeper lesson here too. (You know, Dean never misses a chance to push us further.) After watching, you're going to appreciate your life anew. We have it pretty great. Push that sense of entitlement out of your mind and you'll find yourself smiling a lot more often.

That's a major dose of reality

Loved it. I was just telling someone yesterday to go get the movie How the West was Won". Remember "49" or bust when people headed west in wagon trains? That was 165 years ago and that is not really a long time if you think about it. I was born in 1948 and I like to look at all the changes that have taken place. People really do need to do a reality check every now and then and some need to get a life. We have so much to be grateful for. When I was a kid our telephone did not have a dial. We had to pick up the receiver and listen to see if anyone was on the line because we shared a party line. If no one was using the line the operator would come on and say "number please". Now I finally got myself a smartphone and I am learning how to use it. Amazing! Always making progress and never bored. Thanks for sharing.

O how I needed that today. Dean ya did again. Made us have a really need to do the reality check and things seem a little better. Thank-you again.

Really

Dean,
I know what you mean with when people complain about dropping a call on there cell phone I just tell them there glorified walkie talkies and if you want to talk to someone and not have it happen just go home to your land line and call there land line. Our world is moving so fast and people have no patience for anything, they are mad when the drive through doesn't have there order for them before they order it. Thanks for the WW and everything you do for us.
Keith

Funny! It does however make

Funny! It does however make you remember just how lucky we are and that we go about our daily lives, not thinking about how simple technology has made it for us. It also illustrates just how our kids do not appreciate it either- since they never experienced not having the "toys" that make our lives easier.
Thanks again for an appreciation reminder!

Perception

amkandell's picture

I learned that lesson long ago and have never forgotten it. The problems are not always what you see but how you see it. This lesson has helped me learn how to avoid a lot of stress through the years. Thanks for the reminder to look at how I see the problems. Sometimes looking at the way we view a problem has also given me the solution.

Thank you for the Mother's Day wishes. So far it has been a fantastic one for me. I hope all the moms here and everywhere are also having a fantastic day.

Reality

That was funny and so true. We are off if we
look for the silver linings in life.

Correction

WE are better off if we look for the silver
lining.

Hit the nail on the head

JoshV's picture

This is exactly what I needed to see this evening. Thanks Dean for reminding us not to take so seriously. Sometimes we just need to laugh.

It was great.....

AndyS's picture

This was definitely a great way to start off the EDGE... with a laugh and a lesson.

I'm also one of the ones who has seen many changes in my lifetime. There was an article not long ago (unfortunately I couldn't find the link to post here Sad )that started off by saying " If you were born after 19?? ( I don;t remember the exact year) you missed..... and the list included things like the Rotary phone, vinyl records, 8- track tapes, Ice boxes, cars with no seat belts, AM only radios, etc. So many items that were "top of the line" at one point and obsolete today. A trip to a museum would be a real eye opener for sure. It would hopefully make a younger person a little more grateful for the things they do have today.

Then there's the lesson in all this as well. As Louie said, everybody who gets on a plane should be so grateful they can and excited that they can because the alternative is much longer than a delayed flight. If anyone thinks there is an inconvenience during a flight, they need a reality check for sure.

As for me, thanks to your lessons, Dean, and the lessons of many of the students and teachers here, I see things with a very different set of eyes today than before. Situations like my recently having my car towed the night before my daughter's wedding would have previously sent me off the edge but instead, I focused on the solution and not the cause of the towing. ( I happen to believe it was not my fault either Eye-wink ) The whole situation was solved within 1 1/2 hours and the next day went as planned with no mention of the situation. Today, it's just a joke we tell and I'm fine with it.

So the expressions " What you see is what you get" and "You are what you think you are" are so right on. Add to that now " Your perception is your reality" and that says it all. I perceive that life is good. I have my DG family and friends to help me when I need it, lift me when I'm down and stand behind me if I fail. What could be better?

Dean, You have been an inspiration to me for years!! I have learned much not only about Real Estate Investing, but more importantly about life and how to potentially manage my life better. You truly are an inspiring leader. It is a pleasure to surround myself with talented tried and true professionals such as those I have learned from in the Edge events, the Master Minds, and your Weekly Wisdom Blog. Again, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! May God bless you to continue to inspire others to a higher level of thinking and actions.

Perceptions & Reality

It's so easy to let an attitude of entitlement sneak in when it's so prevalent around us. I work hard on constantly reminding myself (and my kids) that we've been given so much and our goal should be to give generously. Possessions can never get a grip on our heart if we're willing to give them away...

Thanks Dean!!

Thank you Dean for another great Weekly Wisdom. You always give us so much and I'm extremely grateful!!

Weeeeeeeeee!!!!

markriese's picture

I really needed to see that video again! (thanks for showing it to us at the Edge!)

Every time I get on a plane, I want the Window Seat, to watch as we takeoff, fly over the earth and then come in for a landing! I swear I'm the only one on the plane muttering under my breath "awesome!" and "oh yeah!" as we take off Smiling

Reminds me of the Commercial with the Geico Pig Maxwell, leaning out of the car with a streamer screaming WEEEEE!!!! WEEEEE!!!! (all the way home)...

YOU NEED THAT SENSE OF AMAZEMENT TO TAKE ACTION. Whether it's calling banks, making offers, putting out bandit signs, putting up craigslist ads... you need that I CAN'T BELIEVE I GET TO DO THIS sense of amazement to keep moving. I can't tell you how many wholesalers I've met who tell me point blank "I'm not willing to do that" - and I'm like "BUT THAT'S WHAT DEAN TEACHES US TO DO!!!"

If you're not living in amazement, you slip into complacent Smiling

Very True

Perception of a circumstance creates your reality - Wow, I really like that.
And, yes, I can't see that clip with Louis C.K. often enough. Brilliant.

Give yourself a chance to change your reality

Tina1's picture

Hey Dean!

Thank you, as always for your passion. I was fortunate to attend my 4th Edge and loved this intro. Instant gratification without giving thanks seems to be the standard these days. But.... please excuse, I will likely get a little wordy here.

Now, I have a little catching up to do, so DG Fam please accept my gratitude to all of you, and my apologies for not posting nearly a year. I'm very sorry if anyone PM'd me and I did not respond. I'll work on getting caught up. It was a tough one, and maybe I will share sometime soon, but suffice to say that I had to manage my time between family and real estate and in doing so I had forgo certain things like sharing with ya'll here on DG.

With Dean's help and a natural positive attitude, I was able to get through a year that I could have taken as dismal, dreadful, hard, tough, draining, stressful and overwhelming, but I felt blessed every single day! I woke up with a smile on my face each day, recited thought-felt gratitudes, and went on tenaciously rehabbing 21 houses out of state, flipping a few rehabs here in Vegas and juggling a winding down of a 25 year business and giving calm attention to family and handling things for others I had not been doing. I don't say this to toot my own horn, in fact my plans for this last year were far more than I accomplished. I say this to thank Dean and all of you for the blessing of doing it all with a headache and a smile, and the shear adrenalin that helped me over the occasional dreaded (but never admitted) overwhelmed feeling.

We do what we have to do and if we choose to do so with true gratitude, the stars align and life is good.

It's when we blame others or things, or constantly dream up excuses and forget to give or thank that we feel everything is letting us down. Dean gives us the tools, but we need to step off that curb, face the music (or the Realtor, or the bank, or the seller) and get out there and learn by taking action-- give ourselves a chance and the universe plenty of thanks along the way and believe. And yes, perceive our circumstances so we choose our reality.

A dear friend (a DG-er too) reminded me of a piece of wisdom she read. If you want to change your life, you have to change your life.

I've turned a page and writing a new chapter-- with all my heart.

That's my take----
UGHHHHH! I have to put in this darned code, can't read the letters, tried 3 times.... (smiling!)
Thanks Dean!

Love to the DG Family,
Tina

Great message Dean, I find

hlawrence80's picture

Great message Dean, I find that to be one of the greatest lessons I've learned. I'm graduating high school this week and a lot of adverse "circumstances" and "uncertainties" for my future are popping up but I believe I will respond to these trials positively, getting stronger, slicing through them or so to speak, and most of the issues I face and fret over today will be gone by next week so their's no point in overwhelming myself, I just need to focus—smile, most importantly, and get on it with the end in mind. I believe I will get there, I'm thankful for where I'm at and I know I have the capabilities to achieve my goals. I will push forward and do many real estate deals in the next 2 years, I hope all of you investors do the same and God bless!

Funny Video.

Hi Dean I really enjoyed the video it was very humorous and true in many ways.Thanks.

Just as good the 2nd time!

kareng's picture

This video was just as funny as the first time you showed it at the Edge! Our perception is EVERYTHING!!!

We so often take life so seriously. Why? It's still going to happen! If you get stuck in traffic, do you get there any faster because you stress over it? Of course not! We just need to take a deep breath (or two or three) and roll with it.

Once we learn to do this, laugh at ourselves and just keep moving forward and "go with the flow" we find that life is so much simpler and rewarding than trying to "paddle upstream".

Thanks, Dean, for not only teaching us how to be successful as REIs but as human beings.

Namaste.

Karen

Life is short

keb64's picture

If you saw the pic of me at the edge when I gave my class on OPM then you know that I love every minute I am here. Now think about this..in 2009 feet stopped working and they told me I might not walk or live if they don't fix the lower part of my brain. Then I and buying/selling/ and helping people get into real estate. Let the small things go because it is just not worth the energy.....NOW GO GET SOME

Hey Dean!

thomgilbert's picture

Great video I'm still laughing all over again. Keith hit it on the head Life is Short! Why get caught up in small unimportant things in life. Unfortunately for many of us it takes getting close to death to realize how to truly live our lives with Gratitude and love for all!

Thanks Dean for all you do to help us in Life and real estate.

Make it a great week!
Thom

The power of perception

Gratitude is truly this the attitude that determines our latitude in life. Thank you Dean for the powerful reminder. It is necessary, even crucial to be grateful for it shows that we are not lacking, but rather are content with what we have and we know that better is on its way!!!!!

Perception is everything

Dean, Thanks for this weekly wisdom. I have 2 quick examples. Found out a week ago my car needs a part replaced, $500.. Warranty expired 3,000 mile ago. Of course I was irritated etc etc. Saturday I was looking under the same car due to noise I've been hearing. I drove it onto a sturdy 4x4 piece of wood to be safer. Backing off the wood it flipped up, I think, any my windshield wiper reservoir no longer holds liquid. Two irritating situations, neither one life threatening or life changing but made me a bit angry and frustrated at the time.

Car Wreck...

markriese's picture

I love this video so much I had to watch it again. When you said "perception is reality" and gave the illustration of the Car Wreck, I just realized - I JUST HAD THAT HAPPEN TO ME!

I was coming home from work a few weeks ago, a lady pulled out in front of me from a side street, and I couldn't swerve and we had a fender-bender... She was upset about insurance, for her car AND my car, I told her not to even worry about it, "hey, this is my chance to get a new car, I needed one anyway! My car's almost worthless, why file a claim!" We traded numbers, just in case...

you are SO RIGHT, "Hey, let's have coffee" can be your CHOICE to respond to a tough situation!

One door closes
