Today is Memorial Day. In my opinion the most important National holiday of the year BAR NONE!
If it were not for our veterans we would not have any holidays at all!
We need to honor our Vets year round, not just this weekend. No Veterans, no real estate investing.
GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS AND THE USA!!

My dad is 84 yrs. old and a veteran of WWII. He lied about his age and joined the Coast Guard when he was 16 - he turned 17 in mid Atlantic aboard the USS Menges DE320. He was the youngest seaman aboard ship. Before he was 18, the Menges was hit astern by a German topedo. In a matter of seconds he lost 5 of his best buddies. 31 was killed, 28 injured.
The Menges managed to stay afloat and was eventually towed back to a shipyard in NY. Another DE (the Holden) had been hit in the bow. The damaged section of both ships were cut off and the good parts welded together and the resulting new ship was sent back into battle, still named the Menges.
After a survivors leave, my dad was reassigned to a troop carrier called the Wm. Black.
Dad is very proud to have served his country. But he gets upset sometimes because the government sort of treats the Coast Guard like a 'red-headed step-child' (his words). Many people today don't even know that the Coast Guard play a big role in WWII. He says the Navy and Marines had a secret weapon - the Coast Guard!
The WWII vets are quietly slipping away day by day, and I think it will be a sad day for our country when they are all gone. They truely were the 'great generation.'
These WWII vets are leaving behind some big boots to fill. I'm grateful there are still young men and women willing to step up and fill them. I appreciate all that serve, regardless of what war, or what uniform they wear. I wish them well. May they all return home safely and live to be as old as my dad.

From all those that appreciate us serving in the military and for what all have done to keep our nation free and what it is today. It makes us very proud to hear this from all those that support us now and for all those that have lost their lives in doing our job as well. Thanks.

Let us remember the crew on the space shuttle Endeavor. They have undocked from the space station and are starting to process their return with expected landing on june 1st. Gods speed for a safe journey home to Commander Mark Kelly and crew. Thoughts and prayers abound for those serving overseas at this time for a safe journey home as well and for the families that wait for them.
Thank you my fellow Veterans and lets remember the real reason for this holiday. To remember the ones that did give all for our freedom.
God Bless the USA

and I totally agree with the comments made by everyone. My son Brad is mustering out of the Navy next month and I know first hand how much the appreciation for his service means to him. They sacrifice so much for us and we should try to do even more, like assisting the families of deployed solders
Just keep your eyes open, your heart willing and your hands ready to do what ever you can to help. God Bless all of you, our military and their families and the United States of America!!!

If it's to be, it's up to me! Believe in YOURSELF!
Thanks, from all the veterans. Being a soldier is the hardest job hands down, going to combat is something you never what to see.
Having served myself, including 2.3 years in a combat zone, and having been an Air Force Brat for 21 years prior to that, I thank ya'll for thanking us. Please remember to thank veterans in deed as well as in words.

Thank you for those who had served and are serving to this day. God Bless
Thank you for your sacrifice in service to our country.
We wouldn't have the freedom in this country without all the sacrifices our veterans and active military members make. I am so thankful for them! My uncle too was in WWII, he served in the Philippines; He was the "first" one drafted from South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 18. He is going to be 87 this year! My dad was a veteran for the Navy; he was honorably discharged when he got a mental disability as a result of his service. He never served in a war, but he served his country and his life was forever changed from his short service to our country. My cousin and his wife serve us in the USAF; as well as the National Guard reserves.
I am eternally grateful to all the DGers here who also gave/give their time to dedicate to serving our country and/or have family members serving! Lets bow our heads down and remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Respectfully and honorably, Happy Memorial Day!
