There are times when you can use a handshake deal to do a bird dog, however, having any type of contract is going to make them take the agreement just a little more seriously, knowing that you have legal recourse if they don't perform. Any documentation helps, and it doesn't necessarily have to be drawn up by an attorney. As long as both parties sign it, it is a binding legal contract.

I'm currently dogging for a couple investors and they have sent me a contract which I sign, make copies for my files, scan into my computer and send them back to the investor. It's comforting to know we are on the same page and understand our rolls in the deals.
